Meet the Artists: Two Destination Language

Remembering Together Scottish Borders has appointed their artists to co-create memorials with communities. Meet Katherina Radeva and Alister Lownie (Two Destination Language).

Two Destination Language is led by Katherina Radeva and Alister Lownie. They make work about identity, celebrating difference to help stimulate dialogue between communities. They have made exhibitions, walks, theatre and dance, books and films, which have toured nationally and internationally, from rural venues to the V&A Museum and from Azerbaijan to the USA. Some of their work is made in collaboration with professional artists, and some with people in communities around Britain. They also support artists with residencies and professional development.

Kat and Alister say: “The last few years have impacted everyone in different ways, and we’re delighted to be working with other Borderers to understand those better. From the sheer challenge of the unprecedented situation came new communities of volunteers, new forms of support and new medicines -- but those came alongside loss, uncertainty and isolation among other difficulties. Without remembering and acknowledging all that, we cannot look to the future and say we’ve learned. But the question of how to do that is a difficult one, and this project bringing together minds from all parts of the Borders is a really exciting opportunity to do that together.”

“We’re organising events with groups across the Borders who were most deeply impacted, working on ideas with those who wish to share memories and thoughts for how we commemorate the experience of covid. We’re sharing the conversation at public meetings and online, enabling everyone in the area to take part. From campfire drinks and village hall teas to drawing, knitting and performance sessions, we’ll use many methods to unlock ideas and discover how they resonate with Borderers. The goal of this project is a way of remembering which Borderers find appropriate and emotionally engaging for years to come: something which feels an important part of our area’s cultural heritage.”
