Meet the Artists: Lateral North

Remembering Together: Argyll and Bute have appointed their artist to co-create memorials with communities. Meet Lateral North (Graham Hogg).

Lateral North was co-founded in 2013 by directors Graham Hogg and Tom Smith. The practice emerged from their joint architectural masters project on ‘Uncertain Futures’ which explored Scotland and its relationship to the north. 

 Lateral North offered a narrative which asked people to rethink Scotland’s position, proposing ‘New Northern Frontiers’, asking how the country, its communities and people could proactively engage with, learn from and connect to northern neighbours. 

 As the practice has developed other key personnel have joined the team to offer a variety of design-led services that creatively tell stories, map data and offer unique multi-disciplinary skills.

The Lateral North team

Lateral North says: “We are excited to work on this project as we believe that design will play a key role in responding to global challenges that we face and how we can learn and reflect from them at a local level will be an important part of that process.”

“Our approach to Remembering Together for Argyll and Bute is built around three key components. These are as follows:

Physical Engagement - We will be working with communities throughout the region by hosting in person workshops which will be focused around local and regional maps, as well as providing inspiration for what the ‘memorial’ may be in the future.

Digital Engagement - Our digital engagement is focused on a virtual reality platform to immerse people in the ideas gathered as part of engagement sessions as well as provide opportunity for people to feedback their ideas as well.

Toolkit - We have developed a toolkit which will be sent out to groups of people so they can host their own workshops. This will be helpful in small communities and hard to reach places.

Overall, we have developed a bold and engaging brand for the project which helps give a strong identity to it and allows it to be instantly recognisable. It is our hope that this can then we utilised as the project moves forward.”
